Zapardiel has tagged me with a literary tag and the rules are:

It´s easy: copy the second paragraph of 139 page of the book that you´re reading now. I think you like reading and you´ve time to do it.

In this moment I´m reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay (a forensic officer with a secret hobby).

Harry´s eyes were closed and he was clearly floating away on a rising tide of pain. He took a soft and eneven breath. “Stop … the nurse,” he said. “Like… the monkey…” His head arched back slightly, he beagn to breathe faster but still very roughly.

I take the chance to recommend it to you. I tag Lawbug and everybody who want to get tagged.

El horror, el horror…

April 15th, 2007 by Cornflakegirl

I like Horror movies, I love to feel adrenaline caused by a good plot. However, withing horror genre there are thousand rubbish movies that or they are so predictable and so typical plots, or they are only remakes or sequels that they don´t have anything new to say about it. It´s really sad.

hostel

Nevertheless, sometimes I find a movie that make me think like Hostel by Quentin Tarantino (although it was written and directed by Eli Roth). Caution: Spoilers. The plot is about 3 young backpaquer guys traveling aroung Europe. In Holland, they met another young guy who persuaded them to go to Slovakia because there they will find beautiful women that go nuts with american men. When they arrive in this hostel, they will disappear one by one to become the “fun” by rich people with a lot of power and a lot of time to undergo new sensations, extreme ones. This movie has been criticized by its gore scenes but I think they´re not so hard and so gratuitous but this is not the key that I´d like to talk about.
In this story, there are not monster but human beings. Maybe because we don´t have any predator, we become in predators for the other human beings. We´re cruel, twisted, merciless, I mean we´re animal in the worst sense of this word. Another good examples are Running Man and Rollerball. The first one plot is about a group of convicts who are chasing while TV cameras are filming them. If one of them survives, he could be liberated or at least this is what they say. The second movie is Rollerball, in 2018 year there is a sport named Rollerball, it´s really violent and when one of the player is killed, audience is higher.

Running Man Rollerball

Like it was said in 8mm at the end (when Nicolas cage asked to the murdered and “actor” in the Snuff movies): “I´m sorry but I didn´t have a terrible childrenhood and my father never abused of me. I do what I do because I want and I can”. This is not new at all, Joseph Conrad in Heart of Darkness already explained it in the best possible way so, I only can farewell with Kurtz´s words: “The horror, the horror!”

Asesinato8mm

Anyway, I don´t want to skip the chance to comment about a funny detail about Hostel and it was a short sentence of Takashi Miike in this movie. It was so funny! typical of his movies.

Miguel´s Birthday

April 9th, 2007 by Cornflakegirl

This weekend we´ve celebrated Miguel´s birthday and for that, I made 2 cakes: a birthday and a veggie cake.

cake

The birthday cake was made following Mary Berry´s chocolate rum cake but with this oven that I have, it´s really hard to get a good baking. Sometimes I believe that this oven doesn´t follow Thermodinamic rules. So for this cake, instead one, I have had to make 2 cakes. The cake was tasty and nice but too rich.

And for lunch, I made a vegetable cake following a recipe from Avoca Café Cookbook. It was lovely but a little bit ugly. I will write down the recipes below.

Veggie

Chocolate Rum Cake

Ingredients:
main cake:

200 g plain chocolate
100 g unsalted butter
50 ml Rom
3 eggs separated
100 g dark muscovado sugar
75 g self rising flour
50 g ground almonds
Filling:
225 g plain chocolate
100 g unsalted butter
4 tbsps apricot jam

Pre-heat the own to 180ºC. Grease cake tin. Melt the chocolate and the butter on a bowl over a pan of hot water. Place the eggs yolks and the sugar on other bowl, mix them well and then pour the chocolate over them. Add to this mix, rom, eggs whites, flour and almonds. Mix them well and then turn into the tin. Bake it 45 minutes. Allow to cool down. Cut in two pieces and fill it with the mix of chocolate, butter and jam (Melt the chocolate and the butter on a bowl over a pan of hot water and mix with the jam).

From here you could find my changes: in the filling i didn´t include jam and I only mix chocolate and cream. For icing, you can use suger icing paste (ready paste that you can find them in the supermarket ready to use). I covered the cake with a mix of chocolate and butter (Melt the chocolate and the butter on a bowl over a pan of hot water) and let it to get hard into the fridge.

Nuts and lentils loaf

Ingredients:
50g Puy lentils
300g orange lentils
50g butter
1 onion
3 carrots
3 celery sticks
6 cloves of garlic
75g breadcrumbs
150g Cheddar cheese
75g different nuts
6 eggs
Boil the lentils following packing time indications (40 minutes for puy lentils and 15 minutes for orange lentils). On a pan, melth the butter (I prefer to use olive oil instead of butter) and the other vegetables, cook them low not too long, don´t cook them until they loose their colors. On a bowl, place the vegetables, lentils, breadcrumbs, cheese, eggs and nuts. Mix them weel and turn them into the greased tin. Bake it at 170ºC for 45 minutes.

You can serve it cold or warm.

O'Connell st.
I´m back in Dublin and it´s Easter. I love this season because the days are getting longer and they´re so warm… In addition, Miguel´s birthday is next weekend so it´s a good excuse for cooking new dishes. This time I´ve chosen some recipes from Avoca Cook book, some irish food this time.
