Do we need poetry?

August 29th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

Is poetry an endangered species? After reading the article by Betty Badaui on Canal Literatura’s website, I was wondering about this question and some others like do we need poetry? I don’t think it would be an endangered species and I do think we do need it. Moreover, I do know that new formats will come in the same way that some of them already came. Maybe the most known is the lyrics where poetry has music as vehicle to let its message come across to the audience. Another examples are music videos or movie soundtrack to tell a story, to express an idea or just a feeling. For example, Blue by Kieślowski where music was a metaphor of liberty.

Nevertheless, although new forms, new ways, new formats will come but the subjects wil remain the same. We’re still talking about what hurts us, what makes us happy, what makes us smile or what we long badly. In my view Poetry will be with us while there are language, communication and mankind. And what about after? New languages, new ways to communicate, new beings, new poetry will be.

What do you think about it?

HPV

August 21st, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

During several months, I was wondering if I should take HPV vaccine or not. So after talking with my gynaecologist in Madrid, she persuaded me to do a PAP smear test and as the result was negative, I made up my mind and got the vaccine. The only side effects that I suffered after every dose were migraines. The first dose was at the end of December and the last one was in July. This vaccine doesn’t protect you against all kinds of cancers and it’s not a contraceptive either however it’s a good protection against the most dangerous HPV types.

This vaccine is free in many countries, and from 2010 it’s also en Ireland for second level school girls. Nevertheless, the rest of the women who wants to get it, they should pay it and I’m afraid it’s not very cheap although the prices are getting down.

The reason why of this post is giving some information about the vaccine and its side effects. Unfortunately, I usually suffer of many vaccines’ side effects but in this case, they were only migraines. I was quite concerned about them especially after some polemic articles few months ago but I’m afraid these articles were the ignorance result. For further information, please visit this web where HPV is clearly explained: what is is and how the vaccine works.

I think every woman should be responsible of her health and I’m including all about her sexuality as well (period, checking, contraception, fertility, menopause, etc) so having said that, all the information should be always welcome. We should keep in mind that this HPV viruses also affect men (in their cases, they develop penis cancer) and a condom is not an effective way to protect against it.

Just Tori and Iveagh Gardens as her background. That was last 16th July concert. On a temporary (maybe improvised) stage there was Tori with a piano and a keyboard. Nothing else. It was a unpretentious, homey, pure and genuine gig. I would like to highlight two songs: Winter and Crucify that made me cry but each one for different reasons. In a nutshell, a stunning concert.

The Red Tree

August 7th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

The Red Tree isn’t a tale, nor a it’s a metaphor about a trip through your darkest hours where the final destination is hope. The girl, nameless main character, shows us with some images and few words that, it doesn’t matter how lost we’re feeling, there’s always a way out.

It’s a beautiful book, full of simbolism but close and warm. The author, Shaun Tan, is well known because of his collaboration in the movie, Wall*E.

Iron Maiden @ The O2

August 2nd, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

On Friday night, we attended the first Iron Maiden’s gig in Europe in the so called “last tour”. It also was the first time that I saw them on the stage. What can I say? They were awesome! Although the setlist’s songs weren’t my favourites, their performance was stunning. Dio was supposed to be their supporter band but, unfortunately, he passed away some months ago so they dedicated him their song, “Blood Brothers”, and it was warm and sweet. After so many years in the business, because of their talent and experience, it was easy to realise why they still are on the top. Up the Irons!

Setlist

1. The Wicker Man
2. Ghost Of The Navigator
3. Wrathchild
4. El Dorado
5. Dance Of Death
6. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg
7. These Colours Don’t Run
8. Blood Brothers
9. Wildest Dreams
10. No More Lies
11. Brave New World
12. Fear Of The Dark
13. Iron Maiden
Encore:
14. The Number of the Beast
15. Hallowed Be Thy Name
16. Running Free
