Twitter

June 26th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

Social networks can help you to get in touch with school mates, previous jobs mates, friends but meet new people with the same likes and dislikes too. Maybe the most famous ones are Facebook and Twitter. both of them very different and both with millions of users.

Twitter is 140-character communication service platform. It could be a microbloggin’ service and social networking. With these messages, known as tweets, users can send and receive messages and using hash tags (tags with symbol hash) can chat as well. Maybe it could seem quite easy but it took me a while to get use to it and now, it hooks on me. It helped me to meet new friends, poets, writers and agents. Using the hashtags I’ve met many users with my same hobbies.

The thing that surprised me most is how close the artists are to fans. You can write them, comment about what they’re saying and know when they will make a gig or attend any event.

Here I’m leaving some links that I’ve found very helpfull and interesting guide for writers by Inkygirl and by tribalwriter. Tags for writers. Chats for writers. I hope you like them.

And you, what do you think about twitter?

Self Publishing

June 6th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

The topic of the hour is, because of the e-books, the self publishing. People in favour of self publishing talk about that it’s the only way to get your writing published, you have more freedom and control of your work otherwise you couldn´t get. People who is against it, they argue that it would mean a decrease of writing quality. My question is, if you admire the musician who record or self publish their own music to show it to Discography Industry, gigs venues owners and magazines, why do we think that poets and writers’ work is so different?

My personal view about self publishing is like internet’s blogs: there are many out there, some of them are impressive but many other are just a waste of time. But I do believe is to stand out, you should offer a high quality item (not only good writing quality but a good design, publishing, etc) it should be unique and easily linked to its author.

What do you think about it?

April and Poetry

May 8th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

During April, I’ve taken part of two poetry challenge: NaPoWriMo and PAD Challenge. In both cases, we should write poems from the provided prompts. At the beginning, I wasn’t sure if I could end it but I was finding it more interesting every day. Below you can read what I´ve learnt from this experience.

1. Poetry is a dying animal´s cry out.

2. It doesn’t matter how hard we try different forms, different subjects, we have a personal voice and it commands us.

3. The animal always comes backs to its place, it doesn’t matter how hard we try to change it.

4. Everybody has its own imagery although we were following the same prompt.

5. Deadlines are the perfect catalyst for inspiration.

6. The Quality comes out from Quality and Hard Working.

7. Perseverance is a doubled-edge weapon; commitment ties us and hard working tortures us, but it´s worth.

8. Like for narrative, reading is a must for learning to write.

9. If our experiences mark our character, they mark us as poets, as voices.

10. Writing poetry is open the eyes to a world that although it’s been with us for long time, always seems pretty new and surprising.

The challenge has been hard, tiring, difficult but highly rewarding. In November this challenge will start again but I don’t know if I will do it again or take part of NaNoWriMo (to write a novel in 30 days). However, after my exams in June, I’d like to enrol a poetry course or find a mentor. I have so much to learn and this challenge really encourage me to keep on working on my own voice.

Banks in Ireland II

April 2nd, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

Last November, I was delighted with my new bank but now because of its closure, I´ve had to change to a new bank.  While with  Halifax everything was easy and quick; on the contrary Permanent is making everything confusing and hard. Although it was quite easy to open the account, now it´s getting more difficult and less efficient. The most important aspect is that the services that I require from my bank, I can´t get them although I was told that  I would. In addition, the quality of the service is poor.

So if the situation doesn´t improve in the next few weeks, I would be forced to change to a new bank.

Homo homini lupus

March 21st, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

Homo homini lupus (man is a wolf to [his fellow] man). Thomas Hobbes

If the war is one of the natural instics of the man; it´s ironic to realize that how often the art is used as weapon to fight this behabiour back. It doesn´t matter how much we´ve grown up, how smart we thing we are: the wars are still happening because we´re animals, beasts like Hobbes said. I´ve included here three examples of anti-war songs (in almost one century). It´s sad to see that only the location and the weapons have changed because the rest is the same old story.

YouTube Preview Image

1954 “Le déserteur” by Boris Vian about Indochine´s war.

1989 “One” by Metallica about the First World War when a soldiel loses all his senses and limbs. This video has several scenes from the movie “Johny got his gun”.

2007 “Heaven´s Hung in Black” by W.A.S.P. sabout Irak´s war. The title of the song is Civil War´s and Abraham Lincoln´s mentioned.

I´ve chosen two heavy metal bands´songs becuase I find very funnt that these kind of bands were named dangerous for the youth because of their violence when they are openly pacifist.

We already have date for our wedding: 13th February in Belfast City Hall. I can´t understand why we should go to another country to getting married but this is the way it´s. Unbeliable! By the way, should I start thinking about any dress? I should?
