Twitter

June 26th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

Social networks can help you to get in touch with school mates, previous jobs mates, friends but meet new people with the same likes and dislikes too. Maybe the most famous ones are Facebook and Twitter. both of them very different and both with millions of users.

Twitter is 140-character communication service platform. It could be a microbloggin’ service and social networking. With these messages, known as tweets, users can send and receive messages and using hash tags (tags with symbol hash) can chat as well. Maybe it could seem quite easy but it took me a while to get use to it and now, it hooks on me. It helped me to meet new friends, poets, writers and agents. Using the hashtags I’ve met many users with my same hobbies.

The thing that surprised me most is how close the artists are to fans. You can write them, comment about what they’re saying and know when they will make a gig or attend any event.

Here I’m leaving some links that I’ve found very helpfull and interesting guide for writers by Inkygirl and by tribalwriter. Tags for writers. Chats for writers. I hope you like them.

And you, what do you think about twitter?

Self Publishing

June 6th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

The topic of the hour is, because of the e-books, the self publishing. People in favour of self publishing talk about that it’s the only way to get your writing published, you have more freedom and control of your work otherwise you couldn´t get. People who is against it, they argue that it would mean a decrease of writing quality. My question is, if you admire the musician who record or self publish their own music to show it to Discography Industry, gigs venues owners and magazines, why do we think that poets and writers’ work is so different?

My personal view about self publishing is like internet’s blogs: there are many out there, some of them are impressive but many other are just a waste of time. But I do believe is to stand out, you should offer a high quality item (not only good writing quality but a good design, publishing, etc) it should be unique and easily linked to its author.

What do you think about it?

Formats III

May 22nd, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

This is the third post that I write about the new formats used to tell a story. If in the previous two posts, I talked about the blogs that become books and the books that inspired their own soundtrack; now I would like to talk about when music and image merge together to tell a story. If the musical theatre or movies are very old, I mean its shorter version: music videos. In about five minutes or even less, they introduce some characters, a plot and a surprising ending. The structure is similar to microfiction’s. These microfictions are very popular now because they are the best option for Internet. Nevertheless, both cases are not new, they started in their late sixties or early seventies.

I’ve chosen three music videos with very different music, subject and narrative form.

1. A-ha: Take on me
YouTube Preview Image

The story is simple, it’s just a romantic love story with a tragic ending: two young people from two different worlds, met and fell in love. A bad guy tried to avoid their runaway together. Maybe it’s full with cliches but it’s easy, nice and when it was created, it was the best music video together with Thriller by Michael Jackson.

2. Rammstein: Du hast
YouTube Preview Image

Between A-ha’s and Rammstein’s music videos, there had been many different more music videos with better tecniques and special effects. I’ve chosen this one because I like the song (quite different from A-ha’s one) and Rammstein is a band who makes very interesting videos with a story on it. They are quite polemic and transgressor. Du Hast and Engel are influenced by Quentin Tarantino and his movies Reservoir Dogs and From Dusk till dawn.

3. Nine inch nails: Pinion
YouTube Preview Image

Last, this short video (just 1.23 minutes) without lyrics, almost without music shows us a sick nightmare that makes us wonder why is that man (or woman) there? How did s/he get there? Why this punishment? It’s a whole story by itself but it could a beginning or even an end of a longer story.

These three example are just a sample of what was done and is being done at the moment but there will be more and they will be different in all the possible ways. I suppose that one of the most insteresting option will be two or more art forms merged in just new, reloaded futuristic one. Always searching for the moment, the brevity and the impact in just few seconds. Where Internet is becoming vast and huge, the quality should stand up on its way.

When could we order art á la carte? Just focused on one consumer?

Homo homini lupus

March 21st, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

Homo homini lupus (man is a wolf to [his fellow] man). Thomas Hobbes

If the war is one of the natural instics of the man; it´s ironic to realize that how often the art is used as weapon to fight this behabiour back. It doesn´t matter how much we´ve grown up, how smart we thing we are: the wars are still happening because we´re animals, beasts like Hobbes said. I´ve included here three examples of anti-war songs (in almost one century). It´s sad to see that only the location and the weapons have changed because the rest is the same old story.

YouTube Preview Image

1954 “Le déserteur” by Boris Vian about Indochine´s war.

YouTube Preview Image

1989 “One” by Metallica about the First World War when a soldiel loses all his senses and limbs. This video has several scenes from the movie “Johny got his gun”.

YouTube Preview Image

2007 “Heaven´s Hung in Black” by W.A.S.P. sabout Irak´s war. The title of the song is Civil War´s and Abraham Lincoln´s mentioned.

I´ve chosen two heavy metal bands´songs becuase I find very funnt that these kind of bands were named dangerous for the youth because of their violence when they are openly pacifist.

The Plucker by Brom

March 13th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

The Plucker is a fairy tale about toys´ loyalty and it´s a step forward regarding to Toy Story; The Plucker goes where Toy Story doesn´t dare. Brom tells the story of Jack, a Jack-in-the-box toy, just a forgotten toy, who doesn´t hesitate in going to rescue his owner Thomas when Thomas’ soul is kept by Nigerian doll. This doll has trapped an evil spirit inside, The Plucker (because he plucks the eyes of his victims).

This is the first illustrated novel by Brom and I enjoyed it a lot. It´s visually stunning and the story is engaging: a really page-turner. It´s darker, wicker and more disturbing than Tory Story. I highly recommend it. I´m looking forward to reading his other works: Devil´s Rose y The Child Thief.

Although I was told that it could be a movie soon, I didn´t hear anything else about it; however, I know that it was adapted for a stage play.

Filament

February 27th, 2010 by Cornflakegirl

english spanish

In a mainly masculine world, it´s not unlikely that erotica and pornography were focused on them and their likes. However, everyday there are more women who (we) search and claim for items for us. We can count on magazines likes Playgirl and Syzygy or movies by Erica Lust. Another example of this trend is new genre for the occidental market like Yaoi.

In my view, as a Erotica literature fan, it has been very hard to find a magazine that matches up to my erotic and writing expectations; however few months ago I found a publication that is the perfect mixture (high writing quality with hot pictures). Its name is Filament although it has only three published issues (now four), her editor Suraya Sidhu Singh is working very hard to keep on improving it. In this magazine, we could find articles about different subjects since porno movies, photography, WWF, literature or interviews with well known people like Warren Ellis, Steve Forrest or Erika Lust.

Filament is a very interesting project that just started and I highly recommend it to you. Maybe instead of complaining about a male-oriented sexuality, women should search or even create our own erotica.
