2012 Resolutions

This New Year Resolutions can be summarized in just one sentence “Seize the day”. I want to finish two novel’s drafts and one poem book draft. I’ve been searching for my own voice and I hope to be closer to find it. I’m not talking only about writing but many other aspects of my life. This 2012 is going to be full of changes, some of them will take me longer than others but I’ve already started.

There’s no place for anger but for action and I’ve got it started already. Let’s see how it goes.

What I’ve learned from NaNoWriMo

1. 50K words are many wrods but it isn’t a completed novel.
2. Planning is the key for not get lost in the plot. However, if you limit yourself too much, it’s easy to get out of plot when you’ve written 30K words.
3. NaNoWriMo is a long distance running and you need to be driven and focused.
4. There will be days where you won’t write down a Word so you have to keep this in mind the days you are writing.
5. The first thousand words are the hardest.
6. The last 10K are even worse!
7. I need to write listening music and the best time for me is after dinner.
8. I’ve not participated in fórum or atended any meeting. NaNoWriMo has been a personal challenge not very social however, I’ve found extremely supporting the people from Google+.
9. NaNoWriMo has been less hard tan I’ve expected.
10. After NaNoWriMo, I need to work a lot on my draft. There are a lot to edit and do!

I’ve also learned that it’s very easy to focus on the main plot and forget about the subplots. I have to find a balance between them when I’m writing from the beginning to the end on a chronologic way because I used to write in a chaotic way jumping between scenes.

Keeping in mind that this was the first time I was taking part on NaNoWriMo, I think I made it very well and what really surprised me is how much I learned from it!

NaNoWriMo: 2nd week

This week has been harder than the previous one, I’ve passed the milestone of 20K words though. I’ve realised that I’ve focused too much on the main plot line and I haven’t developped the secoundary ones too much. I think I should go back and include some pieces of information here and there. However, I will do it after the Nano. How is your writing going on?

I also found out very hard to start writing but as soon as I’m doing it, the words come out easlily and the characters speak more fluently during this week. Now let’s see how the third week is going on. My concern now is that maybe my plot is not enough for 50K words. Any advice?

NaNoWriMo: 5th day

Today is the 5th NaNoWriMo’s day and the fist day was very tough. The first 2K words were hard to write, silly and maybe not the right ones but I didn’t want to stop or quit here. Now, after 8K, it seems easier like if all the words before were just a warming up.

In your cases, what was the hardest part? What is helping you out? For me, my plot scheme is a life-saver that helps me to not get lost. I’m also finding very helpful to read my NaNoWriMo colleagues in G+ to see how they are doing (to be honest, I’m not having too much for browsing the forum).

Now let’s move my fingers and get some writing done!

Heroes, idols and so on…

Everybody has a favourite actor, singer or artist. A person who inspire us or makes us feel admiration. I guess this is different from one person to another but for me, I do value the honesty. I mean when an artist share with us how s/he is showing us his/her weakness and strengths. When s/he dares to confess what mistakes s/he has committed or what kills them inside.

They use their art to show what they’re feeling, their own fears and happiness making us to be part of it. It’s like the old times heroes need to be seen vulnerable to be understood and respected.

In my case, one of this idols is Tori Amos and I leave this interview with you where she talks about her miscarriadges and how there is a light at the end of the tunnel. However, I would like to mention a band named Blue October that I’ve found out recently and with interviews like this one makes me respect and admire them. I hope you like them.

And what about you? What makes you admire an artist?

Antes de meternos en materia, ¿podrías contarnos algo de ti?
¿Podrías decirnos qué podemos esperar tras un título como Un ángel disfrazado de fantasma? ¿Y dónde podemos hacernos con un ejemplar?

Nací en Ciudad Real hace 30 años y desde entonces no he parado. Estudié ingeniería en Cuenca y después de pasar una temporada en NYC, aterricé en Madrid, ciudad con la que siempre he tenido una relación especial, tanto que siempre digo que soy de allí: madrileño de adopción. Ahora vivo en Dublín, donde trabajo de ingeniero.

En rasgos generales, “Un ángel” en una novela intimista narrada en primera persona que espero que sumerja al lector en un viaje único en el que el personaje será capaz de conocerse con más sinceridad que nunca. Todo ello en un decorado inigualable: el sudeste asiático.

Por ahora el libro está disponible en bubok.es y muy pronto estará disponible también en las librerías asociadas a bubok, que cada día son más.

1. ¿A qué público va dirigido?
En general, a cualquiera que esté dispuesto a descubrir una nueva perspectiva en cosas cotidianas, aspectos de la cultura asiática así como de la vida gay, y sobre todo, del sexo tomado como algo natural, que supone una parte esencial en la historia.

2. ¿La etiquetarías como novela gay? Y de ser así, ¿ves alguna limitación en su difusión?
A pesar de tener un protagonista gay, no está dirigida específicamente al mundo gay. Al contrario, cuando trata temas que dentro de la temática homosexual se pueden sobreentender, se explican para que ningún lector se pierda. Sin embargo, no descarto que para un lector gay sea más fácil empatizar con el protagonista.

3. ¿Podrías hablarnos un poco del proceso de escritura de tu novela?
La idea surgió en un blog que tenía antes, como una historia en varias entregas (posts). El personaje me cautivó desde el principio y fui extendiéndolo hasta que visualicé la estructura completa. Una vez creado el personaje, me limité a establecer la ruta del viaje que recorrería por Asia, rellenar algunos puntos de la historia con vivencias personales y el resto me lo fue contando él mismo. Me hizo seguir sus pasos e improvisaciones conforme escribía, tiene mucha fuerza.

4. ¿Qué fue lo más difícil a lo que te enfrentaste? ¿Y lo más fácil?
Supongo que como la mayoría de escritores noveles, una de las cosas más difíciles es sacar tiempo para escribir, compaginar con un trabajo a tiempo completo y una vida social. La energía que se necesita para trabajar en un proyecto como una novela es muy exigente.
Lo más fácil (si lo hubo) supongo que fue encontrar apoyo por parte de mis amigos y familiares. Desde el primer momento la gente me apoyó incondicionalmente, lo cual ayudó en los momentos más bajos.

5. ¿Pensaste en algún momento que podrías verla terminada?
Te mentiría si dijese que no. Por supuesto hubo momentos en los que pensé que nunca terminaría. Tuve un parón durante el proceso de escritura que duró seis meses, y no estaba seguro si en algún momento encontraría las fuerzas para recuperar la inspiración. El proceso de revisión también fue bastante duro, aunque para ese punto el proyecto estaba tan avanzado que resultaba más sencillo continuar que tirar la toalla.

6. ¿Por qué elegiste Bubok para autopublicarla?
En un principio este proyecto surgió como algo muy familiar, que compartiría con mi círculo más privado. Sin embargo, conforme la novela maduraba, fui ganando confianza en el proyecto y por eso me decidí a compartirlo de forma más abierta, aunque manteniendo la autopublicación para hacerme sentir que estoy completando el proceso completo. Por eso bubok me pareció perfecto.

7. ¿Podrías darnos algún consejo a los que aún estamos con nuestros primeros borradores?
No desistir ni olvidar nunca que esto es una carrera larga (un maratón, diría). Desde la primera página que escribí han pasado 2 años y 3 meses, y aún siento que queda mucho por hacer, aunque por suerte cada fase tiene un comienzo y un final. Lo mejor es reservar fuerzas para la revisión, ya que escribir es más fácil de disfrutar.

8. ¿Te dan miedo las críticas? ¿Cuál ha sido la que más te ha sorprendido?
Supongo que me asustan las críticas sin fundamento. Siento que la novela está cargada de dos temas que suelen levantar rechazos automáticos: la homosexualidad y el sexo.
Por lo demás, toda crítica constructiva será bien recibida, ya que me ayudará a mejorar como escritor.

9. Háblanos un poco de tus próximos proyectos.
El pasado noviembre participé en NaNoWriMo 2010 y escribí un borrador en el que tengo puestas muchas expectativas. Aún está en una fase temprana y queda mucho trabajo, pero solo diré que me pongo a prueba escribiendo algo totalmente distinto, en tercera persona y con personajes e historias inventados desde cero. Espero que pueda disfrutar del proyecto tanto como he disfrutado hasta ahora de “Un ángel”.

10. Y por último, ¿te has descubierto algún fetiche al escribir? (algo de lo que no puedas separarte mientras escribes).
Siempre he sido muy alcohólico para los fetiches y en este caso no podía ser menos. Para escribir, una cerveza bien fría me tenía que acompañar. Claro que no podía beber más de una o dos o si no la calidad de lo que escribía caía. Sin embargo, si sabía que iba a escribir el final de un capítulo, cambiaba la cerveza por un vino blanco. Igualmente, un vino tinto para escribir el final. Así siempre queda un buen sabor de boca después de escribir la última palabra.
